Barcelona clinched their 28th La Liga championship on Thursday, May 15, 2025, with a 2-0 derby victory over Espanyol, a match highlighted by another standout performance from teenage forward Lamine Yamal. The win secured an unassailable seven-point lead over second-placed Real Madrid with two games remaining and marked a domestic treble for head coach Hansi Flick in his debut season with the Catalan club.

The decisive moment came in the 53rd minute when 17-year-old Lamine Yamal scored his 17th goal of the season, curling a superb shot into the top left corner from the edge of the penalty area after being set up by Dani Olmo. Fermin Lopez added a second goal deep into injury time, assisted by Yamal, to seal the championship.

The match experienced a brief pause in the first half following reports of an incident outside the stadium where a car allegedly drove into fans, resulting in 13 injuries, with four individuals taken to hospital. None of the injuries were reported as life-threatening. Play resumed shortly thereafter.

Espanyol’s challenge was further hampered when defender Leandro Cabrera was sent off with 10 minutes remaining for an arm strike on Yamal.

The La Liga triumph completes a clean sweep of domestic trophies for Barcelona under Hansi Flick, adding to their Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup victories earlier in the season. “We’ve always thought positively and we could feel it looking at training sessions. At Barca you have to win titles and three titles is just great,” Flick told Movistar Plus. “It’s always important to be mentally strong. That is what we looked for throughout the year. Winning the Super Cup in January gave us confidence.”

Barcelona, who also reached the Champions League semi-finals before losing to Inter Milan, have scored 169 goals in all competitions this season. Their title win came a day after Real Madrid had kept their slim hopes alive with a late winner against Mallorca.

Interestingly, Barcelona have now been confirmed as La Liga champions at Espanyol’s ground more often than at their home stadium in the 21st century, having also secured the title there in 2023. A slight melee occurred between players at the final whistle as Barcelona began to celebrate, with ground staff reportedly turning on sprinklers.

Barcelona will celebrate their victory with an open-top bus parade in the city on Friday, May 16, and will officially receive the La Liga trophy during their home game against Villarreal on Sunday, May 18.
