Carlos Baleba’s arrival appears to have addressed Manchester United’s biggest midfield concern this summer. The next question is whether Michael Carrick’s squad needs one more addition before the transfer window closes — with left-back the obvious area under consideration.
Baleba joins Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans as part of a major midfield overhaul, giving United a younger and more varied set of options alongside Kobbie Mainoo.
The 2-0 defeat at Hull City, however, has inevitably shifted attention elsewhere. Carrick was visibly irritated when asked after that loss whether United had lacked passion, highlighting the scrutiny that follows even one poor result at Old Trafford.
With midfield recruitment now seemingly complete, the focus has turned towards the left side of defence.
Shaw’s fitness remains the key question
Luke Shaw started all 38 Premier League matches last season and was again in the XI for the defeat at Hull. His availability has therefore been a major positive for United.
The concern is whether he can maintain that level across a campaign that is expected to become considerably more demanding.
Shaw endured a difficult period with injuries before last season, including calf and hamstring problems, and made only three appearances for England and three for United between February 2024 and April 2025.
United’s return to European competition will also increase the workload. Once the schedule becomes congested, the club may feel that relying almost exclusively on Shaw is a risk.
Newcastle’s Lewis Hall is understood to be a player United like. The 21-year-old fits the club’s preference for younger recruits and could provide genuine competition for Shaw.
The problem is Newcastle’s position. They have no desire to sell Hall, meaning United would likely have to make a substantial offer to change their stance.
That raises another issue: finances.
United have already committed significant sums this summer, with Baleba reportedly costing up to £70m. The club’s published financial accounts also showed substantial outstanding transfer commitments, while further borrowing was announced in June.
As a result, United are unlikely to simply overpay for a left-back.
Several alternatives remain on the radar
Hall is not the only option linked with United.
Racing Santander teenager Jorge Salinas has reportedly attracted attention, with a €16m release clause, although Atletico Madrid are also interested.
Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde has likewise been mentioned amid uncertainty over his future at Camp Nou. The 22-year-old Spain international was left out of Barcelona’s recent win over Elche, with Hansi Flick saying the player needed to “clear his mind”.
United could also decide to work with what they already have.
Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui have both filled in at left-back, while Baleba’s versatility could offer another emergency option after his arrival.
Harry Amass was used as Shaw’s deputy during pre-season but was not included in the squad for the Hull trip. His future is therefore another factor in United’s decision-making.
For now, the expectation remains that United would like to add another left-back before the 1 September deadline. But with finances, potential sales and the availability of existing options all influencing the decision, a new arrival is far from guaranteed.
