Newcastle United have agreed a deal worth up to £52m to sign Nico Gonzalez from Manchester City, with the midfielder now set to undergo a medical ahead of his move to St James’ Park.
The agreement is understood to be worth around £48m up front, with a further £4m available in add-ons. Gonzalez has been given permission to travel to Newcastle to complete the next stage of the transfer.
The 24-year-old becomes a significant addition for Matthias Jaissle, who has been looking to add more experience and quality to a Newcastle midfield undergoing major changes this summer.
Gonzalez joined Manchester City from Porto in January 2025 but struggled to establish himself as a regular starter. He made 41 appearances last season, although his opportunities in the Premier League became increasingly limited after January.
His departure now appears to have been accelerated by City’s own midfield reshaping. The club have brought in Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for a reported £116m and are closing in on Lille midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi, leaving Gonzalez further down the pecking order.
Why Nico Gonzalez suits Newcastle
For Newcastle, the deal addresses an obvious need in the centre of the pitch.
The Magpies have undergone considerable change in midfield, with Bruno Guimaraes moving to Arsenal and Sandro Tonali joining Tottenham. Jaissle has consequently been working with a much younger group, including summer arrivals Sean Steur and Aladji Bamba.
Gonzalez offers something different.
The Spain international combines physicality with the ability to carry the ball and contribute defensively, while his experience of playing at a high level in both Spain and England gives him a level of maturity that Newcastle’s younger midfielders cannot yet provide.
He also fits the recruitment profile Newcastle have followed this summer: a relatively young player with significant room for development rather than an established veteran approaching the latter stages of his career.
The midfielder was also among the Premier League’s leading midfielders for high turnovers last season, while ranking highly for line-breaking passes, suggesting he can contribute both when Newcastle are pressing and when they have possession.
Newcastle get Jaissle’s midfield reinforcement
The move represents an important step in Newcastle’s summer rebuild.
The club had already brought in several young players, including goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek, defender Amar Dedic and midfielders Steur and Bamba. But Jaissle’s comments after Newcastle’s opening-day draw with Liverpool made clear that further adjustments were still required.
Gonzalez now looks set to provide the experience and athleticism missing from a midfield that has lost two influential figures.
Newcastle came close to beating Liverpool on the opening weekend before conceding a late equaliser, offering early encouragement under their new manager. Gonzalez’s arrival should give Jaissle another option as he attempts to turn that promising start into a sustained challenge.
For Manchester City, meanwhile, the deal represents a relatively quick exit for a player who arrived from Porto only in January 2025. Gonzalez had previously indicated that he wanted to remain at the Etihad, but his reduced role and City’s recruitment have changed the situation.
The transfer is not yet formally complete, with Gonzalez still required to pass his medical and finalise personal terms. But with the clubs having reached an agreement and the player cleared to travel, Newcastle are now closing in on one of the most significant midfield additions of their summer window.
The deal is expected to take Newcastle’s summer spending beyond £200m, although the club have also generated substantial income through player sales.
For Jaissle, however, the more immediate significance is on the pitch: Nico Gonzalez gives Newcastle the experienced midfield reinforcement they have been searching for.
