Premier League 2026/27: Major New Rules You Need to Know
New rules on injuries, time-wasting, substitutions, VAR and hydration breaks are coming into effect this season
The English Premier League, one of the biggest club tournaments in the world, is getting underway today. In the first match of the season, reigning champions Arsenal will face newly promoted Coventry FC. The match is scheduled to kick off at 12:30 am Indian time.
When it comes to the new season of the Premier League, many rules have been changed and new ones have been added. Let’s check out what they are…
1. When play is stopped due to injury, a player seeking treatment on the pitch must leave the pitch for at least one minute after play has resumed.
2. If the referee believes that a team is deliberately delaying the restart, a five-second countdown may be introduced. If the countdown ends before the ball is brought back into play, possession will be reversed, meaning a throw-in will be given to the opposing team to restart from the same position.
3. Substitutes have a 10-second time limit to leave the field of play. If the time limit is exceeded, the substitute cannot enter until the first stoppage time after one minute has elapsed.
4. VAR can play a wider role in situations where a player is shown a second yellow card, leading to a red card. This change is specifically designed to correct a second yellow card that is not clear
5. The Premier League will not have hydration breaks like those seen at the World Cup. Drinks breaks will only be given when the weather is above 30 degrees Celsius during the match.
Summary:- The new Premier League season kicks off with several important rule changes. From mandatory time off the pitch for injured players to five-second countdowns, stricter substitution timings, expanded VAR intervention and limited hydration breaks, here are the major changes fans need to know.
