Man Utd believe they can challenge despite spending gap

Manchester United remain confident they can compete for major honours despite spending considerably less than several of their Premier League rivals this summer.

United have invested £148m on new arrivals, a figure dwarfed by Manchester City’s £458m outlay and more than £300m spent by both Chelsea and Tottenham. Liverpool, meanwhile, started their win at Ipswich with Alexander Isak, Bradley Barcola and Florian Wirtz — all signed for more than £100m.

United’s biggest deal was Carlos Baleba’s move from Brighton, which could reach £70m. Yet head coach Michael Carrick insists transfer spending alone does not determine whether a team can challenge.

“The challenge is getting the right dynamics, the right balance and the right group together,” Carrick said.

The United boss believes the additions of Baleba, Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, along with the emergence of 19-year-old Shea Lacey, have left his squad in a stronger position than at the end of last season.

Carrick’s side finished third last term after winning 12 of his 17 matches in charge, although concerns remain over the lack of competition for Luke Shaw at left-back and limited cover for striker Benjamin Sesko.

Berrada backs United’s financial approach

United’s spending power has inevitably been viewed against the backdrop of the club’s substantial debt. The club’s latest quarterly figures put total borrowings at £1.29bn, while a further £91.92m was added through June’s bond refinancing.

Chief executive Omar Berrada, however, insists United can manage those financial pressures while remaining ambitious on the pitch.

Speaking at the club’s Fans Forum on 30 July, Berrada said the challenge was to maintain a sustainable financial structure while continuing to compete for trophies and pursuing plans for a new stadium expected to cost more than £2bn.

Carrick shares that ambition and believes United must aim beyond simply improving their league position.

“Being at this club, you’ve got to strive to win,” he said. “That’s where we want to be, and we want to try and get to that on a consistent level.”

Whether United’s more measured approach can close the gap on the Premier League’s biggest spenders will become clearer as the season develops. For Carrick, though, building the right team matters more than trying to win the transfer-market spending race.
