Liverpool’s impressive run under new manager Arne Slot continued as Darwin Nunez’s decisive strike secured a 1-0 victory against RB Leipzig, maintaining their perfect start in the Champions League.
Nunez, making his fourth start under the Dutch manager, converted Mohamed Salah’s header in the 27th minute to seal Liverpool’s 11th win in 12 matches across all competitions. The Uruguayan forward was a constant threat throughout, nearly doubling his tally before the interval when former Liverpool goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi tipped his header over the crossbar.
Gulacsi was also called into action to deny Virgil van Dijk, who found himself unmarked from a corner. Liverpool’s claims for a penalty were waved away in the 38th minute when Nunez appeared to be clipped by Willi Orban.
The hosts had their moments, with Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher experiencing a nervy spell when his weak headed clearance presented Benjamin Sesko with an opportunity, but the striker’s curled effort drifted wide. Kelleher recovered to make crucial saves from both Sesko and Xavi Simons.
RB Leipzig had two goals disallowed for offside, but Liverpool’s disciplined performance ensured they maintained their winning momentum. The result puts them in a strong position ahead of upcoming home fixtures against Bayer Leverkusen, managed by former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso, and 15-time European champions Real Madrid.
The victory sees Liverpool join fellow Premier League side Aston Villa with three wins from three matches in Europe’s premier club competition.
