Al-Ettifaq part ways with Steven Gerrard After 18 Months
Steven Gerrard has left his position as manager of Saudi Arabian club Al-Ettifaq after 18 months in charge. The former England and Liverpool captain joined the club in July 2023 and had signed a contract extension until 2027 just last month.2
However, a disappointing run of results this season, with Al-Ettifaq winning just five of their 17 league games, has led to his departure by mutual consent.3 The club currently sits 12th in the 16-team Saudi Pro League, five points above the relegation zone.4
Gerrard expressed his gratitude to Al-Ettifaq and reflected on his time in Saudi Arabia.5
“Football is unpredictable and sometimes things don’t go the way we want,” Gerrard said. “However, I leave with great respect for the club and the country. I have no doubt that the work being done will bring success in the future and I wish the team the very best for the rest of the season.”
Al-Ettifaq president Samer Al Misehal praised Gerrard’s contribution to the club, highlighting the positive changes he implemented.6
“Sometimes things don’t go as planned, but the firm foundations he helped build will guarantee a bright future in the long term,” Al Misehal said. “He changed the club for the better and that will never be forgotten.”
Gerrard’s Managerial Career
Gerrard’s managerial career began at Rangers in 2018, where he led the club to their first Scottish Premiership title in 10 years.7 He then joined Aston Villa in November 2021, but was sacked after just 11 months following a poor run of results.8
His time at Al-Ettifaq saw him guide the club to a sixth-place finish in his first season, but a decline in form this season led to his departure.9
Gerrard’s next move remains uncertain, but he will undoubtedly be considering his options carefully as he looks to continue his managerial career.
