Ancelotti’s Brazil Debut Ends in Lacklustre 0-0 Draw with Ecuador

Carlo Ancelotti’s tenure as Brazil’s head coach began with a frustrating 0-0 draw against Ecuador in a tightly contested South American World Cup qualifier on Thursday, June 5, 2025.

In Ancelotti’s first match in charge, a much-anticipated debut for the decorated Italian manager, Brazil struggled to break down a well-organised Ecuadorian defence. The visitors’ clearest opportunity of the first half came from a Vinicius Jr. shot, created by Gerson, which was saved by Ecuador’s goalkeeper, Gonzalo Valle.

After the break, Ancelotti’s side showed more attacking intent but failed to convert their chances. Richarlison was unable to capitalise on a well-placed pass from Vinicius Jr. inside the penalty area, and a powerful long-range effort from midfielder Casemiro was also stopped by the impressive Valle. Ecuador, for their part, remained a threat but were often caught by the offside trap.

Following the match, senior players urged patience with the new manager, who was appointed last month. “Ancelotti hasn’t had time to show us his game plan yet. It’s only been two or three days of training,” Vinicius Jr. commented.

Casemiro echoed that sentiment, stating, “Of course we always have to improve, but little by little we’re getting better. It’s only been two or three days with a new coach. The dynamic is good, the atmosphere is good.”

The result leaves Brazil in fourth place in the CONMEBOL qualifying standings with 22 points. Ancelotti was brought in to guide the five-time world champions through a challenging period and secure their place at the 2026 World Cup, to be held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

Ecuador remain in a strong position to qualify, sitting second in the table with 24 points. The top six teams from the continent will qualify directly for the tournament.

Brazil’s next match is at home against third-placed Paraguay, who defeated Uruguay 2-0 in their recent qualifier. Ecuador, meanwhile, will face ninth-placed Peru on Tuesday.
