Real Madrid defender Raul Asencio will stand trial in September over allegations relating to the alleged sharing of intimate footage involving a minor, despite both alleged victims withdrawing their complaints against him.
According to The Athletic, the 23-year-old faces two charges: allegedly distributing a video without consent and allegedly sharing sexually explicit footage involving a minor. He will stand trial alongside former Real Madrid youth players Ferran Ruiz, Juan Rodriguez and Andres Garcia, who face separate charges relating to the alleged recording and distribution of intimate videos involving a minor and another woman.
The trial is scheduled to take place in Gran Canaria on September 3, 4 and 7 after the presiding judge rejected all preliminary arguments put forward by the defence teams.
Among those arguments was an attempt to exclude evidence obtained from the defendants’ mobile phones. However, court documents seen by The Athletic show the judge ruled that the seizures were lawful and did not require the owners’ consent. The ruling also stated that investigators believed the defendants had backed up data to cloud accounts before deleting content from their devices, allegedly in an attempt to obstruct the investigation.
The case stems from an alleged incident at a beach club in the Canary Islands in June 2023. Prosecutors allege intimate footage was recorded and later distributed without consent.
Asencio is not accused of participating in or recording the alleged sexual encounter. Instead, prosecutors allege he requested the videos before showing them to another individual, actions that form the basis of the charges against him under Spain’s Criminal Code.
Although both alleged victims have since withdrawn their allegations against Asencio, the judge ruled that those withdrawals must be confirmed in court before they can be formally considered during proceedings. The allegations against the other three defendants remain unchanged.
The trial will determine whether Asencio bears criminal responsibility for the alleged distribution of the footage. He has not been convicted of any offence, and the proceedings remain ongoing.
