Atalanta Thrash Juventus 4-0 to stay in Serie A title race
Atalanta delivered a stunning performance to defeat Juventus 4-0 at the Allianz Stadium on Sunday, strengthening their hold on third place in Serie A and ending the hosts’ five-match winning streak in the league. The emphatic victory moves Atalanta to 58 points, three behind leaders Inter Milan. Juventus remain in fourth place with 52 points.
The defeat marked Juventus’ first home loss in Serie A by a margin of four or more goals since 1967, prompting jeers from frustrated home supporters.
Both sides had early chances, with Khephren Thuram shooting just over for Juventus and Davide Zappacosta firing wide for Atalanta. However, it was Atalanta who took the lead just before the half-hour mark. Serie A’s leading scorer, Mateo Retegui, converted a penalty for his 22nd league goal of the season, after Weston McKennie was penalized for handball.
Atalanta dominated the remainder of the first half, with Ademola Lookman striking the woodwork and Juventus goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio forced into several saves.
Marten de Roon doubled Atalanta’s lead early in the second half, pouncing on a rebound after a shot was blocked by Juve defender Lloyd Kelly. Zappacosta made it 3-0 in the 66th minute, finishing from close range after a brilliant back-heel pass from Sead Kolasinac.
Lookman completed the rout in the 77th minute, capitalizing on a slip by Juventus substitute Dusan Vlahovic and scoring with a deflected shot.
“This is football. You go from victories to defeats, you have to consider the whole journey, Juve were coming from a series of victories,” Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini told DAZN. “It was an unimaginable result for many, but it was the perfect performance from us.”
Juventus coach Thiago Motta said: “I think today we were up against a team that was eager to capitalise on our mistakes… We gave players like Lookman the chance to take advantage of counter attacks. After a defeat like that, we are certainly sad and disappointed. We will no longer be talking about fighting for the title.”
The match highlighted Atalanta’s attacking prowess and clinical finishing, while exposing Juventus’ defensive vulnerabilities and a lack of creativity. The heavy defeat significantly damages Juventus’ already slim title hopes and raises questions about their ability to secure a Champions League spot.
