Arsenal draw at Man United as Title Hopes all but over
Declan Rice’s powerful strike earned Arsenal a 1-1 draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford, but the result significantly dents the Gunners’ fading Premier League title hopes. Arsenal now sit 15 points behind leaders Liverpool, having played one game fewer.
Arsenal dominated the first half but lacked a clinical edge in attack. They were punished for their profligacy in first-half stoppage time when Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes curled a 25-yard free-kick past a poorly positioned David Raya.
Raya, at fault for the opening goal, redeemed himself with crucial second-half saves from Noussair Mazraoui and Joshua Zirkzee. Arsenal finally found an equalizer in the 74th minute. After United failed to clear, Rice unleashed a superb rising drive past Andre Onana.
The match concluded with a dramatic double save from Raya, who denied Fernandes twice in quick succession in the dying seconds to preserve a point for Arsenal.
Fernandes Leads Spirited United Display
Despite Manchester United’s overall struggles this season, Bruno Fernandes once again demonstrated his importance to the team. The Portuguese midfielder’s expertly taken free-kick gave United the lead, and he almost snatched a late winner, only to be denied by Raya’s heroics.
Fernandes is United’s leading Premier League scorer with seven goals and leads the team in combined goals and assists with 14.
While United were largely outplayed in the first half, manager Ruben Amorim will be encouraged by their spirited second-half response. Raya’s saves from Mazraoui and Zirkzee were crucial in preventing a home victory.
The draw leaves Manchester United in 14th place in the Premier League, a clear indication of their diminished status this season. The result, while highlighting Fernandes’ individual quality, underscores United’s overall inconsistency and their distance from the league’s elite. The points, still, help them in their quest for the European spot.
