Atletico end winless run with last-gasp 2-1 victory at Sevilla
Midfielder Pablo Barrios scored deep into added time to snatch a crucial 2-1 La Liga victory for Atletico Madrid away at Sevilla on Sunday, April 6th, ending a damaging six-game winless run across all competitions. The win keeps Atletico’s faint title hopes alive after both leaders Barcelona and second-placed Real Madrid dropped points on Saturday.
Atletico, recently eliminated from both the Champions League and Copa del Rey, desperately needed a positive result. Sevilla took an early lead through a thunderous strike from French midfielder Lucien Agoumé.
However, Atletico responded relatively quickly. Julián Álvarez equalized from the penalty spot in the 25th minute after Conor Gallagher was fouled inside the area.
The match then became a largely attritional affair until the closing moments. In stoppage time, Barrios embarked on a driving run through the midfield before unleashing a powerful shot from the edge of the box that found the bottom corner, sparking jubilant celebrations from manager Diego Simeone.
“We needed this win so badly,” captain Koke told Movistar Plus. “After the first goal, which was a blow early on, we bounced back and changed the result. We deserved the win, and this is the line to follow… It’s been a tough few days for us, because when things don’t go the way and you want them to, it’s even more annoying.”
The victory moves Atletico Madrid to 60 points, consolidating third place. They are now three points behind Real Madrid (63 points) and seven behind leaders Barcelona (67 points), with eight games remaining in the season. Sevilla remain 11th with 36 points.
