Atletico Madrid Top La Liga After Alvarez’s Winner Against Osasuna
Atletico Madrid climbed to the top of the La Liga standings on Sunday after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Osasuna. Julian Alvarez’s decisive second-half goal extended Atletico’s winning streak to 14 games and propelled them past rivals Real Madrid, who were occupied with the Spanish Super Cup.
Alvarez’s goal, his 13th in 28 appearances across all competitions, came from a well-executed set-piece. Antoine Griezmann delivered a short corner to Clement Lenglet at the back post, who set up Alvarez for the match-winning strike.
Manager Diego Simeone praised the team’s focus on set-pieces as a key factor in their success. “We had been talking with the guys about giving set-pieces the importance they deserve. It gives us the chance to win games when it’s not easy,” Simeone told reporters.
Despite their exceptional form, Simeone urged his squad to remain grounded. “We need to stay humble and be aware of what we’re playing for. Without humility, we are going nowhere,” he said.
When asked about Atletico Madrid ‘s chances of securing their third La Liga title under his leadership, Simeone remained cautious. “It’s too soon to make predictions. To replicate our first half of the season, we’ll need to keep working one match at a time.”
Atletico’s remarkable run continues to position them as serious contenders for the title, but Simeone’s focus remains firmly on maintaining their current momentum.
