Barcelona are on the verge of strengthening their defence after reaching an agreement in principle with Spain international Aymeric Laporte, who has reportedly given his approval to join the Catalan giants this summer.
The experienced centre-back, who currently plays for Athletic Bilbao, has informed those close to him of his desire to make the switch to Camp Nou, with the message already conveyed to Barcelona president Joan Laporta.
Laporte’s impressive performances for Spain during their triumphant 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign are understood to have convinced Barcelona to step up their pursuit of the veteran defender. The 32-year-old played a key role in helping La Roja lift their second World Cup title, further enhancing his reputation as one of Spain’s most reliable defenders.
Barcelona’s pursuit is expected to be straightforward, as the defender’s contract reportedly includes a โฌ15 million release clause, meaning the club will not need to negotiate a transfer fee with Athletic Bilbao if they choose to activate it.
