Calafiori Header Seals Arsenal’s Opening-Day Win at Old Trafford
Arsenal began their Premier League campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford, thanks to a decisive first-half goal from summer signing Riccardo Calafiori.
The Italian defender struck in the 13th minute, rising to head home Declan Rice’s corner after United goalkeeper Altay Bayındır misjudged the delivery. From there, Mikel Arteta’s side relied on defensive resilience, with centre-backs William Saliba and Gabriel producing commanding performances to protect the narrow lead.
Manchester United showed more attacking spark than much of last season, with new arrivals Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo both testing Arsenal’s David Raya. The Spanish keeper stood firm, pulling off key saves in each half to deny the hosts a route back into the game.
United manager Rúben Amorim was left frustrated as his side’s midfield struggled for rhythm, with Manuel Ugarte’s cameo drawing criticism for wasteful passing and a rash late foul. Despite a spirited push in the closing minutes — including a late scramble from a corner — the Red Devils failed to find an equaliser.
Arsenal, meanwhile, can take encouragement from the solidity of their defence and their effectiveness at set pieces, an area Calafiori emphasised after full-time.
“We’ve been working a lot on set pieces and it showed today,” the 22-year-old said. “Every season we must improve, and that’s the mindset we carry.”
Arteta’s side leave Manchester with three valuable points, while United will take solace from an improved display under Amorim, though their lack of cutting edge remains a concern.
The result puts Arsenal sixth in the early standings, behind Manchester City, Liverpool and Tottenham, who also opened their campaigns with wins.
