Chelsea maintained their perfect Conference League record with a commanding 4-1 victory at Panathinaikos on an emotional evening marked by tributes to former defender George Baldock.
The match carried special significance as it was Panathinaikos’ first home game since Baldock’s passing at age 31 on October 9. Pre-match tributes saw both teams honouring the former Sheffield United player, with Panathinaikos players warming up in shirts bearing his number 32, while Chelsea players displayed a commemorative shirt. Fans from both sides held up placards with the number 32, and David Bowie’s “Starman” – a reference to Baldock’s nickname – echoed through the stadium.
The hosts started with intensity, forcing Chelsea goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen into early action to deny Tin Jedvaj’s header in the second minute. However, Chelsea, featuring 11 changes from manager Enzo Maresca, gradually took control of proceedings.
Joao Felix broke the deadlock with a well-crafted counter-attacking move, exchanging passes with Mykhailo Mudryk before finishing from close range. Mudryk doubled the lead after the interval, heading in Pedro Neto’s cross for his first goal of the season, before turning provider for Felix’s second goal, which took a deflection en route to the net.
Christopher Nkunku added a fourth from the penalty spot after Daniel Mancini’s foul before former Manchester United midfielder Facundo Pellistri netted a consolation goal for the Greek side.
The victory ensures Chelsea maintain their flawless record in the group stage of the competition.
