Dorgu Volley Seals Narrow Manchester United Win Over Newcastle
Manchester United secured a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Newcastle United at Old Trafford on December 26, 2025, with Patrick Dorgu’s stunning first-half volley proving decisive in a Premier League contest dominated by Newcastle possession but settled by United’s defensive resilience.
The breakthrough came in the 24th minute when Dorgu capitalised on a poor defensive clearance, striking a clean volley into the net to score his first goal for Manchester United. Despite enjoying just 33% possession, United made their moment count and spent much of the remainder of the match absorbing pressure.
Newcastle controlled large spells, particularly after the break, finishing with 67% possession, 16 shots, and 11 corners, but struggled to find a way past United’s reorganised defence. Expected goals reflected how closely contested the match was, with United posting 1.17 xG to Newcastle’s 1.18.
Rúben Amorim’s side lined up in a 4-2-3-1, marking his first Premier League start with a back four. Lisandro Martínez, captaining the side, anchored the defence effectively before being substituted late on as United protected their lead. Goalkeeper Senne Lammens made key interventions to preserve the clean sheet.
The second half saw a flurry of substitutions. United introduced Jack Fletcher, Joshua Zirkzee, and Leny Yoro, while Newcastle responded with a triple change on 68 minutes as they searched for an equaliser. Despite sustained pressure, including late attacks and set pieces, Newcastle were unable to convert their dominance into goals.
Bookings were issued to Luke Shaw and Matheus Cunha for United, and Sandro Tonali for Newcastle, as the match grew increasingly tense in the closing stages.
The win lifts Manchester United to fifth place in the Premier League table and provides a timely boost after an inconsistent run of results. Newcastle, meanwhile, were left frustrated by their inability to turn possession and territory into tangible reward.
