Dortmund Deny Monterrey to Set Up Real Madrid Showdown
Two first-half goals from striker Serhou Guirassy were enough for Borussia Dortmund to hold off a spirited second-half fightback from Monterrey and secure a 2-1 victory in a thrilling FIFA Club World Cup round-of-16 match on Tuesday.
The German side’s victory at the Mercedes-Benz Arena books them a place in the quarter-finals, where they will face 15-time European champions Real Madrid in New Jersey on Saturday.
Dortmund were clinical in the first half. Guirassy opened the scoring in the 14th minute, drilling a shot inside the near post after a neat interchange with Karim Adeyemi. Ten minutes later, Adeyemi again turned provider, setting up Guirassy for a simple finish to double the lead.
However, the Mexican side responded strongly after the break. German Berterame pulled a goal back in the 48th minute, heading in after an initial header from Erick Aguirre was directed back across the goal. Monterrey then pressed relentlessly for an equaliser, with winger Jesus Corona proving a constant threat, but the Dortmund defence held firm to see out the victory.
“It was difficult. They’re a good team with experienced players,” said Guinean striker Guirassy, who was named Player of the Match. “I think we had a very good first half. Second half was a bit harder, but the mindset was tough and we won so we’re all happy tonight.”
The win was soured for Dortmund as English midfielder Jobe Bellingham received a yellow card in the 28th minute, which will suspend him for the quarter-final clash and deny him a reunion on the pitch with his elder brother, Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham.
