Dortmund Thrash Freiburg 4-1 to Boost European Hopes
Borussia Dortmund delivered a commanding performance to defeat SC Freiburg 4-1 away in the Bundesliga on Saturday, April 5th, securing their first league win in three matches and boosting their hopes of European qualification. The victory serves as ideal preparation for crucial upcoming clashes against Barcelona and Bayern Munich.
Dortmund took the lead in the 34th minute through Karim Adeyemi. After the break, the visitors asserted their dominance with three further goals. Carney Chukwuemeka, making his first league start for Dortmund, scored with a deflected effort in the 51st minute.1 Serhou Guirassy added a third with an easy tap-in 17 minutes later, before Jamie Bynoe-Gittens headed home Dortmund’s fourth.
Maximilian Eggestein scored a late consolation goal for Freiburg in the 88th minute.
“This is what we wanted to do against a tough opponent,” said Dortmund coach Niko Kovač. “It is important not only for the table but to go into the next week with a positive result. We have to win our games regardless of what the others will do.”
The win lifts Dortmund to eighth place in the Bundesliga standings with 41 points, keeping them in the hunt for a European spot, though they remain five points adrift of the fourth Champions League qualification place [Note: Based on source text’s gap assertion].
Kovač acknowledged the challenging week ahead, with a Champions League quarter-final first leg against Barcelona followed by a league encounter with leaders Bayern Munich. “After Barcelona, the next tough game is in Munich. Bayern want to win the title. We are on a right track but we need to keep being focused. It makes no sense to celebrate after today,” he added. The convincing victory provides much-needed momentum for Dortmund as they approach these season-defining fixtures.
