Lionel Messi has turned the 2026 World Cup group stage into a personal procession through the record books. Across Argentina’s three Group J games, against Algeria, Austria and Jordan, the 39-year-old captain has broken or equalled a string of landmarks. Here is the full list of what he has achieved.

Every Record Messi Broke or Equalled So Far at the 2026 World Cup

A record sixth World Cup – By featuring in 2026, Messi became the first man to play in six different World Cups, having also appeared in 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022. He is also the first player to reach the knockout stages in six consecutive World Cups.

Most World Cup appearances. Messi extended his own record for matches played at the tournament, reaching 29 against Jordan. He sits clear of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lothar Matthaus, who are level on 25.

All-time World Cup top scorer – Messi now stands alone with 19 goals at World Cups. He equalled Miroslav Klose’s record of 16 with his Algeria hat-trick, moved clear against Austria, and reached 19 with his free-kick against Jordan. He has also passed Marta’s overall mark of 17.

Seven straight World Cup games with a goal – His strike against Jordan made him the first player in history to score in seven consecutive World Cup matches. The run, dating back to the 2022 last 16, took him past Just Fontaine and Brazil’s Jairzinho, who had shared the previous record of six.

Goals in all three group games – Messi became only the fourth player to score in every group-stage match of a single World Cup since the format changed in 1998, joining Cristiano Ronaldo, David Villa and Fernando Torres.

Most goals from outside the box – His Jordan free-kick also handed him the outright record for the most World Cup goals scored from outside the penalty area.

202 caps and counting – During the group stage he passed 200 senior appearances for Argentina, reaching 202 after the Jordan game, with 123 international goals to his name.

How each game unfolded

Against Algeria, Messi opened with a hat-trick, equalling Klose’s record and becoming the oldest hat-trick scorer in World Cup history. Against Austria, a brace took him clear of Klose and past Marta. Against Jordan, he came off the bench to curl in an 80th-minute free-kick, sealing a 3-1 win and the seven-game record.

These are the headline milestones, but not the full tally — Messi rewrote several other lines in the record books across the group stage. He now leads the Golden Boot race with six goals as Argentina head into the last 32, where the holders meet Cape Verde.
