FIFA Reject Proposal to Replace Iran With Italy

FIFA have no plans to replace Iran with Italy at this summer’s World Cup. Sources confirm the governing body remains committed to the original line-up. This follows a bold suggestion from US special envoy Paolo Zampolli. He proposed that the Azzurri should take Iran’s place in the tournament.

Ongoing geopolitical tensions have cast a shadow over Iran’s participation. Conflicts involving the US and Israel previously created significant uncertainty. Consequently, Zampolli lobbied Donald Trump and Gianni Infantino for a change. He argued that Italy’s footballing pedigree justified their late inclusion. Crucially, the four-time champions failed to qualify through the traditional play-off route.

The Iranian embassy responded swiftly to these suggestions on social media. They labelled the proposal a sign of “moral bankruptcy.” They insisted that greatness is earned on the pitch. Meanwhile, Italian officials have also voiced their disapproval of the plan. They believe World Cup spots must be secured through sporting merit.

Infantino Prioritises Sport Over International Diplomacy

Gianni Infantino has consistently backed Iran’s right to compete this summer. He stated that the Iranian team is coming “for sure.” The FIFA president believes sports should remain outside of the political arena. He confirmed this stance during a recent visit to Washington. Furthermore, Infantino praised the quality of the Iranian squad.

Italy’s own ministers have distanced themselves from the US envoy’s comments. Economy minister Giancarlo Giorgetti described the idea as “shameful.” Sports minister Andrea Abodi echoed this sentiment. He claimed such a move would be entirely inappropriate. Conversely, Iran have reaffirmed their total readiness to participate. They are scheduled to play fixtures in Los Angeles and Seattle.

The White House World Cup Taskforce has yet to provide an official comment. However, Donald Trump previously noted that Iran would be welcome. He did suggest their involvement might carry safety risks. Regardless, FIFA regulations grant the body sole discretion over team replacements. For now, the tournament structure remains unchanged. The focus remains on the opening matches in June.
