Los Angeles FC has completed a landmark transfer for Tottenham Hotspur captain and global superstar Son Heung-Min, with the deal reported to be the most expensive in Major League Soccer (MLS)  history, the club confirmed on Wednesday, August 6.

Sources reported the transfer fee is approximately $26 million. The South Korean forward, 33, has signed a Designated Player contract through the 2027 season, with club options to extend his stay until 2029. He will be eligible to play upon receipt of his visa and International Transfer Certificate (ITC).

The move ends a glittering 10-year spell in North London for Son, who established himself as one of the world’s elite forwards.

“I’m incredibly proud to be joining LAFC, a club with big ambitions in one of the most iconic sports cities in the world,” Son said in a statement. “I have come to L.A. to lift trophies and give everything for this club, this city, and its fans. I cannot wait to get started.”

During his decade at Spurs, Son scored 173 goals and provided 101 assists in 454 appearances. In 2022, he became the first Asian player to win the Premier League’s Golden Boot award as the league’s top scorer.

His sensational solo run and goal against Burnley in December 2019 earned him the FIFA Puskas Award for goal of the year, and he was a pivotal member of the Tottenham side that reached the 2019 UEFA Champions League final.

“Sonny is a global icon and one of the most dynamic and accomplished players in world football,” said LAFC Co-President and General Manager John Thorrington. “His ambition, ability, and character align perfectly with our values at LAFC. We are proud that he has chosen Los Angeles for the next chapter of his extraordinary career.”

The captain of the South Korean national team, Son has appeared in three FIFA World Cups and led his country to a gold medal at the 2018 Asian Games.

He becomes the latest high-profile star to join LAFC, following in the footsteps of players like Olivier Giroud, Gareth Bale, Giorgio Chiellini, and his former Tottenham captain Hugo Lloris, with whom he is now reunited.

“Bringing Sonny to LAFC and to our city has been a dream of ours for several years,” said LAFC Lead Managing Owner Bennett Rosenthal. “His signing is a statement of our commitment to excellence on the pitch and our ambition to continue to build our reputation as a world class club.”
