Leaders Inter Milan Squander Two-Goal Lead in Draw at Parma

Serie A leaders Inter Milan dropped potentially crucial points on Saturday, April 5th, as they were held to a 2-2 draw by relegation-threatened Parma after surrendering a two-goal lead. The result came with manager Simone Inzaghi serving a touchline ban following his dismissal last weekend.

Inter, looking comfortable after goals from Matteo Darmian and Marcus Thuram, saw their advantage erased by second-half strikes from Parma substitute Adrian Bernabe and winger Jakob Ondrejka.

Darmian gave Inter the lead in the 15th minute, striking low inside the near post off the woodwork. Parma had threatened earlier through Ange-Yoan Bonny and Dennis Man, but Inter goalkeeper Yann Sommer made key saves. Marcus Thuram doubled Inter’s lead just before halftime with a peculiar chipped finish from Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s pass, scoring his 14th league goal of the season – a personal best.

However, Parma mounted a spirited comeback after the break. Bernabe, introduced at halftime, pulled a goal back on the hour mark with a fine shot from outside the box. Nine minutes later, Ondrejka equalized after a remarkable solo run from near the halfway line, his shot taking a deflection off Darmian on its way past Sommer.

Inter, who face Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals on Tuesday, failed to find a winner and have now won only one of their last six away matches in Serie A. They remain top with 68 points from 31 games, but their lead is now just four points over second-placed Napoli, who travel to Bologna on Monday.

The draw provides a valuable point for Parma, who are 16th and four points clear of the relegation zone. They remain unbeaten in five of their six games under manager Cristian Chivu, a former Inter defender and youth coach.  Inter Milan Parma
