Liverpool have completed the signing of Ronald Araújo from Barcelona, bringing the Uruguay international to Anfield on a season-long loan with an option to make the move permanent next summer.
The Reds confirmed the deal on Monday, with the agreement including a £47.1 million (€55m) purchase option. Liverpool will pay Araújo’s full salary throughout the loan spell but will not pay Barcelona a loan fee. The 27-year-old is also understood to have accepted a wage reduction to facilitate the transfer.
Araújo arrives at Anfield after falling out of Hansi Flick’s long-term plans at Barcelona despite signing a new contract with the Catalan club until 2031 last year. The defender, who will wear Liverpool’s No. 33 shirt, said joining the Premier League club was an easy decision.
“I can’t wait to get started. I’m very, very happy,” Araújo told Liverpool’s official website.
“I’m excited to be here at this massive club with lots of history. I’m excited to meet my team-mates, excited to get started playing, and I’m very motivated.”
The Uruguay international added that Liverpool’s interest convinced him immediately.
“I think it was the ideal move for me at this stage in my career. It was a move that was necessary for me to take. As soon as I heard that interest from Liverpool, everything went into action really, really quickly.”
Araújo strengthens a Liverpool defence that has been stretched ahead of the new season. Ibrahima Konaté departed for Real Madrid earlier this summer, while new signing Jeremy Jacquet is still working his way back from shoulder surgery. Joe Gomez is also sidelined with a muscle injury, leaving captain Virgil van Dijk as the club’s only fully fit senior centre-back.
Capable of playing both in central defence and at right-back, Araújo brings significant experience after making more than 200 appearances for Barcelona since joining the club in 2018. Although he was named one of the club’s captains, injuries and time away from football to recover from depression limited him to just 24 appearances in all competitions last season.
Liverpool had prioritised strengthening their attack during the transfer window, but the opportunity to sign a defender of Araújo’s quality on loan was viewed as too good to ignore. The option to buy also gives the Reds the chance to make the move permanent should the defender rediscover the form that once made him one of Europe’s most highly rated centre-backs.
For Barcelona, the transfer provides financial relief and allows Flick to reshape his defence with players better suited to his tactical approach, while Araújo now has the opportunity to revive his career in the Premier League under Andoni Iraola.
