Manchester United have completed the signing of Cameroon international forward Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford in a deal worth up to £71 million.

After weeks of negotiations, the two Premier League clubs agreed to a transfer package last Friday. Manchester United will pay a guaranteed £65 million in four installments, with a further £6 million in performance-related add-ons.

Mbeumo, 25, has signed a five-year contract with the option of an additional year and is expected to join Ruben Amorim’s squad for their pre-season tour of the United States, which departs on Tuesday.

“As soon as I knew there was a chance to join Manchester United, I had to take the opportunity to sign for the club of my dreams; the team whose shirt I wore growing up,” Mbeumo said in a statement. “My mentality is to always be better than I was yesterday. I know that I have the spirit and character to reach another level here, learning from Ruben Amorim and playing alongside world-class players.”

The transfer saga saw United have two previous bids rejected by Brentford. Tottenham Hotspur had also shown interest in the player, but it is understood that Mbeumo’s preference was always a move to Old Trafford.

The add-ons in the deal are reportedly based on achievable targets related to appearances and goals, making it likely that Brentford will receive a fee close to the full £71 million. The transfer represents a significant profit for the West London club, who signed Mbeumo from French side Troyes for just £4 million in 2019. He went on to score 70 goals and provide over 50 assists for the Bees.

Mbeumo becomes Manchester United’s third major signing of the summer, following the arrivals of striker Matheus Cunha and left-back Diego Leon, as the club continues to rebuild its squad under new manager Ruben Amorim.
