Lautaro Martinez became Inter Milan’s all-time leading scorer in the European Cup/Champions League as the Italian side secured a 2-0 victory over Feyenoord in the first leg of their last-16 tie in Rotterdam. Marcus Thuram opened the scoring, while Martinez’s landmark goal put Inter in a commanding position ahead of the second leg at the San Siro on Tuesday, March 11th.

Thuram broke the deadlock in the 38th minute, stabbing home Nicolo Barella’s looping ball from close range. Kristjan Asllani almost doubled Inter’s lead just before halftime, but his 25-yard free-kick was tipped over the bar by Feyenoord goalkeeper Timon Wellenreuther.

Martinez made it 2-0 five minutes into the second half, firing high into the roof of the net after a lay-off from Piotr Zielinski. The goal, Martinez’s 18th in the competition, moved him past legendary Inter player Sandro Mazzola’s record.

Zielinski had a chance to extend Inter’s lead from the penalty spot after Thuram was fouled by Jeyland Mitchell, but Wellenreuther produced a fine save, diving low to his right.

Feyenoord, seeking a route back into the tie, came close when Brighton loanee Jakub Moder struck the crossbar. They will also be without winger Ibrahim Osman for the return leg in Milan, as he will be suspended for card accumulation, having a yellow card for fouling Denzel Dumfries.

Martinez’s Milestone and Inter’s Defensive Strength

Prior to his goal, Lautaro had a curling strike, saved by the opponent’s GK.

Martinez’s goalscoring form has been crucial for Inter this season. He has now scored six goals in the Champions League, a new personal best in a single edition of the tournament.

While Inter’s attack, spearheaded by Martinez and Thuram (whose opener was his 15th of the season, matching last season’s tally in 11 fewer appearances), has been impressive, their defensive solidity has also been a key factor in their success. Simone Inzaghi’s side have now kept eight clean sheets in nine Champions League matches this season, equaling their club record from 2022/23.

Inter Milan, Serie A leaders, last reached the Champions League final in 2023, losing to Manchester City. Their strong performance in the first leg against Feyenoord suggests they are serious contenders to go deep into the competition once again.
