Mbappé Lawyers Freeze €55m of PSG Accounts
The legal battle between Kylian Mbappé and his former club PSG over unpaid wages escalated significantly on Thursday, April 10th, as the player’s legal team announced they had frozen €55 million ($61.25 million) of PSG’s accounts. Mbappé’s lawyers have also appealed to the French sports minister and UEFA regarding the alleged outstanding payments.
“We’re going to go on the attack,” Delphine Verheyden, Mbappé’s lawyer, stated at a press conference. Another lawyer, Thomas Clay, confirmed the legal maneuver: “We have protectively seized the accounts of PSG, to the tune of 55 million euros, this morning.”
The dispute stems from wages Mbappé claims he is owed by PSG following his departure to Real Madrid as a free agent last year. The French League (LFP) had previously ordered PSG to pay the amount, but the French Football Federation (FFF) later ruled Mbappé’s request inadmissible due to an ongoing civil court procedure. This prompted Mbappé’s team to pursue action through the Paris court system, leading to the account freeze.
PSG, who were not immediately available for comment on Thursday, stated last October they would take the case to court if necessary but were seeking an “amicable solution.” The Ligue 1 champions argue that Mbappé’s contract was “legally amended” and that the player “reneged on commitments” when he left for Real Madrid. This contradicts Mbappé’s statement in January 2024, where he mentioned an agreement with PSG chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi designed to “protect all parties.”
Furthermore, Mbappé’s legal team has filed a separate complaint for harassment, alleging PSG unduly pressured the player to extend his contract in 2023, a year before its expiration.
UEFA confirmed the situation is currently only indirectly linked to them. However, a spokesperson told Reuters, “If a final decision is taken by the French authorities and confirms that there are indeed arrears… the club would then have to pay the arrears on time or risk non-compliance with financial fair play.”
Mbappé, 26, became PSG’s all-time top scorer during his seven-year spell before joining Real Madrid in 2024.7 The freezing of accounts marks a serious escalation in the financial disagreement between the star player and his former club.
