Messi fined for slapping opponent in MLS game
Lionel Messi has been fined by Major League Soccer for slapping Philadelphia Union forward Quinn Sullivan during Inter Miami’s 2-2 draw on Wednesday.
The incident occurred late in the match after Messi appeared to react to an elbow from Sullivan following a challenge. The Argentina international then struck the back of the Union player’s head, prompting an angry response before the referee stepped in.
MLS confirmed that Messi had been fined but did not disclose the amount.
Inter Miami defender Ian Fray was also fined after grabbing Sullivan by the neck during another confrontation between the players.
The feisty encounter ended with two red cards in stoppage time, with Miami midfielder Yannick Bright and Philadelphia’s Cavan Sullivan both sent off. Cavan Sullivan’s subsequent one-match suspension was later rescinded following a review.
Messi was otherwise at the centre of Miami’s attacking efforts, scoring their second goal to end a run without a goal since the death of his father, Jorge Messi.
The 39-year-old had returned to Miami after travelling to Argentina for his father’s funeral. Jorge Messi, who was also his son’s agent, died aged 68 following a long illness.
Inter Miami remain second in the Eastern Conference, seven points behind leaders Nashville.
