Mohun Bagan Super Giant completed a historic league and cup double, defeating Bengaluru FC 2-1 after extra time in a dramatic Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 final at a packed Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on Saturday, April 12th. Jamie Maclaren scored the extra-time winner after Jason Cummings’ penalty had cancelled out an own goal, securing Mohun Bagan’s third consecutive final appearance and making them the first team to win the ISL Final at their home stadium.

In front of a fervent home crowd, Mohun Bagan started brightly, but Bengaluru FC, marshalled by goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu who saved an early Maclaren shot, grew into the game and dominated the first half. Sunil Chhetri saw a header cleared off the line by Subhasish Bose, and Bengaluru also had a penalty appeal waved away when a cross struck Bose’s arm, which was deemed to be in a natural position.

Bengaluru took a deserved lead four minutes into the second half. Ryan Williams delivered a dangerous cross that Mohun Bagan defender Alberto Rodriguez could only slice into his own net.

Mohun Bagan fought back and were awarded a penalty in the 72nd minute when Maclaren’s shot struck the outstretched arm of Bengaluru defender Chinglensana (Sana) Singh. Jason Cummings stepped up and emphatically converted the spot-kick in the 79th minute, sending the final into extra time.

The momentum was with the hosts, and they found the winner six minutes into the first period of extra time (96th minute). Greg Stewart’s low cross was intercepted by Sana, but his heavy touch allowed Maclaren to pounce, turn, and fire through Gurpreet’s legs.

Mohun Bagan managed the remainder of extra time effectively, preventing a weary Bengaluru FC from finding an equalizer. The final whistle sparked wild celebrations, complete with fireworks, as the Mariners became only the second team in ISL history, after Mumbai City FC, to achieve the league and cup double.
