Napoli Crowned Serie A Champions After Victory Over Cagliari
Napoli secured their second Serie A title in three seasons, and fourth overall, with a commanding 2-0 home victory against Cagliari on Friday, May 23, 2025, igniting euphoric celebrations at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium. Goals from Scott McTominay and Romelu Lukaku ensured Napoli finished one point ahead of closest rivals Inter Milan in a thrilling conclusion to the title race.
Inter Milan also won their final match, defeating Como 2-0 with goals from Stefan de Vrij and Joaquin Correa, but it was not enough to overhaul Napoli.
Despite early pressure and missed opportunities from Giacomo Raspadori and Andre Frank Zambo Anguissa, Napoli’s breakthrough came three minutes before halftime. Scott McTominay scored with a spectacular bicycle kick, connecting with Matteo Politano’s cross to send the home supporters into a frenzy.
Romelu Lukaku then doubled Napoli’s advantage six minutes into the second half. The Belgian striker latched onto a long ball, outmuscled a defender, and calmly finished past Cagliari goalkeeper Alen Sherri, effectively sealing the championship. The remainder of the match was played out amidst a carnival atmosphere, with flares and smoke filling the stadium well before the final whistle, which was greeted by fireworks across the Naples sky.
The triumph marks a significant achievement for manager Antonio Conte, who, despite being suspended for this final match, has now guided three different clubs (Juventus, Inter Milan, and Napoli) to the Serie A title. “It happened again, and it’s something wonderful,” Conte told reporters. “When we got to the stadium, it was honestly difficult to get in… I had a slight thought, if we let these people down, it’d be something we carried with us for a long time. All the credit goes to the boys. Winning in Naples is difficult, these boys are doing it for the second time in two years.”
The mood in the stadium had reportedly dipped earlier in the match when news filtered through that Inter Milan had taken the lead in Como. However, McTominay’s stunning opener quickly dispelled any lingering anxiety.
The city’s mayor, Gaetano Manfredi, celebrated the victory on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “It is the well-deserved victory of an extraordinary team and a city that never stops dreaming, fighting and loving.”
Napoli’s victory culminates a fiercely contested Serie A season, bringing the Scudetto back to Naples in memorable style.
