Palmer Seals Victory as Chelsea Edge Past Newcastle
Chelsea continued their ascent up the Premier League table with a 2-1 victory over Newcastle United, with Cole Palmer ‘s second-half strike proving decisive at Stamford Bridge.
The hosts took the lead in the 18th minute through Nicolas Jackson, who converted Pedro Neto’s square pass following an exquisite through ball from Palmer. Newcastle responded when Alexander Isak leveled the score after 32 minutes with a close-range finish.
Palmer, who has been in scintillating form since his arrival at Chelsea, netted the winner early in the second half. The midfielder’s precise strike from inside the penalty area beat Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope at his near post, marking his seventh goal in just nine Premier League appearances.
Newcastle had a golden opportunity to equalize late in the match when Isak rounded goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, but his hesitation allowed Chelsea’s defense to recover and clear the danger.
There was late drama when Chelsea thought they had won a penalty after Christopher Nkunku went down in the box. However, the initial decision was reversed by VAR review when replays showed the forward had lost his footing.
The victory propelled Chelsea to fourth place, though they could drop to fifth depending on Arsenal’s result against Liverpool. The result highlights Chelsea’s impressive start under manager Enzo Maresca, who has guided the team to five victories in their opening nine Premier League fixtures, with their only defeats coming against Manchester City and Liverpool.
For Newcastle, the defeat extends their winless run to five league matches, leaving them in 12th position in the table.
