PSG on verge of Ligue 1 title with 6-1 rout of Saint-Etienne
Paris Saint-Germain took another significant step towards securing the Ligue 1 title with a commanding 6-1 victory away to second-from-bottom Saint-Etienne on Saturday, March 29th. Substitute Desire Doué scored twice in a dominant second-half display that saw PSG extend their lead at the top to 21 points.
PSG, who remain unbeaten in the league, can clinch their fourth consecutive Ligue 1 title with at least a point at home against Angers next week. They currently sit on 71 points with seven games remaining, well clear of second-placed AS Monaco (50 points), who defeated Nice 2-1 earlier on Saturday.
Saint-Etienne took a surprise early lead through Lucas Stassin’s header, raising hopes of an upset. However, Gonçalo Ramos equalized for PSG from the penalty spot just before halftime, after he was fouled by Florian Tardieu.
The visitors asserted their dominance emphatically after the break. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia put PSG ahead five minutes into the second half, before Doué scored their third just three minutes later, finishing off an assist from Bradley Barcola.
PSG continued to attack relentlessly. Joao Neves added a fourth goal in the 62nd minute, and Doué completed his brace four minutes later.
“The first half wasn’t good for us. We conceded a goal quickly, but the most important thing is that we managed to pull ourselves together in the second half and come away with the win,” Doué said afterwards. “I’m very happy with what’s happening. It’s the beginning of great things, at least I hope so.”
The hosts thought they might get a penalty when Nuno Mendes collided with Stassin, but the decision was overturned after a VAR review. Substitute Ibrahim Mbaye completed the rout for PSG with the sixth goal shortly before the final whistle.
The heavy defeat leaves Saint-Etienne on the brink of relegation, while PSG cruise towards another domestic championship.
