PSV Eindhoven Seize Eredivisie Lead as Ajax Stumble before final game

PSV Eindhoven have surged to the top of the Dutch Eredivisie table, overtaking Ajax Amsterdam on a dramatic penultimate matchday on Wednesday. Ajax were held to a costly 2-2 draw at Groningen after conceding a stoppage-time equaliser, while PSV cruised to a 4-1 home victory against Heracles Almelo.

The results mean PSV Eindhoven now hold a one-point advantage over Ajax heading into the final round of matches on Sunday, May 18. Ajax, who began Wednesday’s fixtures with a one-point lead, conceded a decisive goal nine minutes into stoppage time against Groningen. Wout Weghorst had earlier put Ajax 2-1 ahead with approximately 20 minutes remaining, but Groningen’s Luciano Valente reportedly scored the late leveller after Thijmen Blokzijl had also found the net for the hosts.

In contrast, PSV Eindhoven delivered a commanding performance to capitalise on Ajax’s slip-up. American international Malik Tillman and Moroccan midfielder Ismael Saibari both scored twice to secure a comfortable 4-1 win over Heracles Almelo.

PSV will now clinch the Eredivisie title if they win their final match away to 11th-placed Sparta Rotterdam. Ajax, captained by England international Jordan Henderson, host Twente in their season finale, but the destiny of the championship is no longer in their control.

The Amsterdam club has experienced a significant downturn in form in the crucial final phase of the season. They held a nine-point lead with nine matches remaining but have managed to collect only two points from their last four league outings. This recent slump includes a surprising 3-0 home defeat to mid-table NEC Nijmegen last weekend. Wednesday’s draw has further dented their hopes of securing what recently seemed a probable league title.
