Jacobo Ramon netted a dramatic winner in the fifth minute of stoppage time to earn Real Madrid a hard-fought 2-1 La Liga victory over Mallorca at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday, May 14, 2025. The late goal kept Real Madrid’s slim title hopes alive and temporarily delayed league leaders Barcelona’s anticipated championship celebrations.

A 1-1 draw would have been sufficient for Barcelona to secure the La Liga title on Wednesday, owing to their superior head-to-head record over Real Madrid. However, Ramon, a centre back making his first league start, capitalised on a defensive error by Mallorca. The visitors failed to clear a cross, allowing Ramon to pounce on the loose ball and fire a volley into the net.

Mallorca had taken an early lead in the 11th minute through an angled strike from defender Martin Valjent. A depleted Real Madrid side, reportedly missing 12 players due to injuries, responded in the 68th minute when Kylian Mbappe scored with a fine individual effort.

Despite Real Madrid’s statistical dominance – holding over 72% possession, earning 26 corners, and registering 39 attempts on goal compared to Mallorca’s four – they were largely frustrated by an outstanding performance from Mallorca goalkeeper Leo Roman, who made 11 saves.

Speaking to Real Madrid TV, the unlikely hero Jacobo Ramon said, “Mallorca are a good team. They scored the goal and then dropped off a bit. We had a lot of chances, their goalkeeper played a great game, but in the end we managed to win.” He added, “This is inexplicable, I’ve dreamed about it all my life. This shirt is until the end and there is no better way to score my first goal than like this.”

The victory leaves Real Madrid four points behind Barcelona, with Carlo Ancelotti’s side having two games remaining. Barcelona, who have a game in hand, can clinch their 28th La Liga title if they defeat city rivals Espanyol on Thursday, May 15.
