Qatar and Saudi Arabia’s Path to the 2026 World Cup
Qatar and Saudi Arabia have officially qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, securing top spots in their respective groups in the fourth round of Asian qualifying on Tuesday.
Qatar sealed their passage after a 2-1 win over the United Arab Emirates, marking the first time the 2022 hosts have advanced through World Cup qualification. Goals from Khoukhi and Pedro Miguel, both assisted by Akram Afif, ensured Julen Lopetegui’s side finished first in Group A. The UAE pulled one back late through Sultan Adil, but it wasn’t enough to deny Qatar a famous night at the Khalifa International Stadium.
“It’s amazing, an incredible day,” said Lopetegui, who now gets another chance to manage at a World Cup after being dismissed as Spain’s coach just two days before the 2018 tournament. “For me, it’s one of the best days in my career. Today is a big achievement we have to enjoy,” he told beIN Sports.
Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia booked their seventh World Cup appearance after a goalless draw against Iraq in Jeddah. The result was enough for Roberto Mancini’s team to top Group B following last week’s 3-0 win over Indonesia. Iraq, who needed a win to qualify for their first World Cup since 1986, will now head to the playoffs.
Saudi Arabia will host the 2034 FIFA World Cup, making next year’s tournament in North America a key stepping stone in their long-term football ambitions.
Elsewhere, Japan and South Korea, who had already qualified, continued their fine form in international friendlies — Japan recorded their first-ever win over Brazil with a 3-2 comeback victory in Tokyo, while South Korea defeated Paraguay 2-0 in Seoul.
With Qatar and Saudi Arabia joining Japan and South Korea, Asia now has four confirmed representatives for the 2026 World Cup.
