Real Madrid Ease past Brest to Secure Champions League Playoff Seeding
Real Madrid ensured they will be seeded in the Champions League play-off draw after a comfortable 3-0 win against Stade Brest. Rodrygo scored twice, while Jude Bellingham also found the net as the reigning champions finished 11th in the league phase.
Despite the defeat, Brest also qualified for the play-offs as an unseeded team, marking a successful debut campaign in the Champions League for the French side.
Real Madrid’s victory extends their winning streak to five matches in all competitions and secures their place in the knockout stages of the Champions League for the 28th consecutive season. They will now face either Manchester City or Celtic in the play-off round.
Brest, meanwhile, will face a tough test against either Paris Saint-Germain or Benfica in their play-off tie.
Real Madrid dominated the match, with Rodrygo opening the scoring in the 26th minute with a deflected effort. Bellingham then doubled their lead in the second half, finishing off a counter-attack with a composed finish. Rodrygo sealed the victory with a late volley.
Kylian Mbappé’s run of scoring in five consecutive matches came to an end, with the French forward unable to find the net despite several opportunities. He was booed by the home fans after missing a number of chances.
Brest battled bravely and created some promising opportunities, but were unable to break down a resolute Real Madrid defense. Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois made several crucial saves to deny the home side.
Real Madrid will now turn their attention to the play-off round, where they will be hoping to continue their impressive form and progress to the last 16. Brest, meanwhile, face a daunting task against either PSG or Benfica, but will be aiming to cause an upset and continue their European adventure.
