Roma and Juventus share spoils in 1-1 draw
AS Roma and Juventus shared the points in a 1-1 draw in Serie A on Sunday, April 6th, as Eldor Shomurodov’s second-half strike cancelled out Manuel Locatelli’s opener for the visitors. The result hinders both teams’ ambitions in the tight race for Champions League qualification.
Juventus, in new manager Igor Tudor’s second game in charge, started aggressively with Timothy Weah testing Roma goalkeeper Mile Svilar early on. Roma, missing injured striker Paulo Dybala, saw Bryan Cristante denied by a superb block from Pierre Kalulu, before Stephan El Shaarawy hit the post with a header.
The visitors broke the deadlock five minutes before halftime. After a cross was cleared, Juventus captain Locatelli fired a first-time shot from outside the area into the bottom corner.
Roma, who failed to register a shot on target in the first half, responded quickly after the break. Halftime substitute Eldor Shomurodov equalized in the 49th minute, blasting the ball in off the crossbar from close range after Juventus goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio had saved Evan Ndicka’s header from a corner.
Neither side could find a winner in the remainder of the match.
The draw leaves Juventus fifth in the standings with 56 points from 31 games, level on points with fourth-placed Bologna (who host Napoli on Monday). Roma extend their unbeaten league run, stretching back to late December, but remain seventh with 53 points. Claudio Ranieri’s side faces a challenging run-in, including matches against Lazio, Inter Milan, Atalanta, Fiorentina, and AC Milan, as they pursue a Champions League spot for the first time in seven years.
