Ronaldo Becomes a ‘Problem’ for Portugal, Says Agbonlahor

Cristiano Ronaldo, one of football’s all-time greats, has been labeled a “problem” for the Portuguese national team by former England international Gabriel Agbonlahor. The 39-year-old remains determined to extend his career to the 2026 World Cup, despite questions about his current impact on the national side.

Since leaving Manchester United in November 2022, Ronaldo has continued his career with Al Nassr in the Saudi Pro League, scoring an impressive 50 goals last season. However, his recent performance on the international stage during Euro 2024 raised concerns, as the five-time Ballon d’Or winner failed to score. Instead of retiring from international football, Ronaldo has decided to continue representing Portugal, and he made history by reaching 900 career goals.

Agbonlahor’s Critique

Speaking to talk SPORT, Agbonlahor criticized Ronaldo’s ongoing presence in the Portugal squad, suggesting that the veteran forward’s inclusion may have hindered the team during the Euros. “If you watched him in the Euros, he didn’t do anything. He probably cost Portugal by playing too many games,” said Agbonlahor. He also argued that Ronaldo’s continued presence in Saudi Arabia is evidence that he may no longer be suited for European club football.

Agbonlahor further highlighted that Ronaldo’s insistence on being a starter poses a dilemma for Portugal’s head coach, Roberto Martinez. “Ronaldo has already said he doesn’t want to be a bench player. If he’s in the squad, he wants to start. But is Ronaldo bigger than Portugal?” Agbonlahor added.

What Lies Ahead?

Despite the criticism, Ronaldo remains focused on his goals. He has not indicated any plans to retire soon and is expected to push on until the 2026 World Cup, aiming to add to his record 213 caps and 131 international goals for Portugal. The challenge for Portugal will be to balance the integration of emerging talents while managing the legacy and ambitions of their iconic captain.
