Sacking Postecoglou Was ‘Emotionally Difficult,’ Says Spurs Chairman
Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy has described the decision to sack manager Ange Postecoglou as “emotionally difficult” but necessary for the club, despite the Australian leading Spurs to their first major trophy in 17 years.
In an interview released by the club on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, Levy addressed the controversial dismissal, which occurred just 16 days after Tottenham defeated Manchester United 1-0 in the UEFA Europa League final. That victory ended a long silverware drought and secured Champions League football for next season.
Levy acknowledged that while winning the trophy was a moment for which he was “very grateful,” the club’s board felt compelled to act due to a profoundly disappointing Premier League campaign that saw Tottenham finish in 17th place—their worst since the 1976-77 season.
“I don’t regret appointing Ange, I’m very grateful to Ange. In his first season we finished fifth and in his second we were over the moon to win a trophy,” Levy stated. “But we need to compete in all competitions, and we felt that we needed a change. Emotionally it was difficult but we feel that we’ve made the right decision for the club.”
Tottenham appointed former Brentford manager Thomas Frank as Postecoglou’s successor last week, making him the club’s fifth full-time manager in the last six years.
Speaking about the future, Levy expressed a strong desire for success. “Failure is not an option,” he said. “Whenever you have a new coach, it’s always a fresh start. There are always different ideas but we want to build on the success of winning a trophy last season.”
Levy also elaborated on the appointment of Frank, adding, “One of the things that stood out to me with Thomas was that he is clearly highly intelligent, a great communicator, super human being plus all the technical aspects which are obviously important.”
