Senegal retained their continental crown on Sunday night, defeating hosts Morocco 1-0 in a chaotic AFCON 2025 final.
The match at Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium descended into turmoil during the closing stages. However, Pape Gueye produced a moment of brilliance in extra time to decide the contest.
The decisive moment arrived in the 94th minute. Gueye burst through the midfield with immense power, shrugging off Achraf Hakimi’s challenge.
Subsequently, he unleashed a stunning left-footed drive into the top corner. The goal silenced the home support and secured Senegal’s second continental title.
Regulation time ended in extraordinary drama. Following a disallowed Senegal goal, the referee awarded Morocco a disputed penalty in stoppage time.
Furious Senegal players walked off the pitch in protest. Consequently, the incident halted play for 14 minutes. Eventually, captain Sadio Mané persuaded his teammates to return to the field.
Upon the restart, Brahim Diaz stepped up. He attempted an audacious Panenka. However, goalkeeper Edouard Mendy read the flight perfectly and saved comfortably.
Momentum swung firmly back towards the visitors. Morocco pressed desperately for an equaliser during the remaining minutes.
Youssef En-Nesyri headed wide, while defender Nayef Aguerd rattled the crossbar. Nevertheless, the Senegalese defence held firm against the onslaught.
Goalkeeper Mendy and centre-back Moussa Niakhaté repelled every attack. As a result, Morocco’s wait for a first title since 1976 continues.
