The Argentine football community is in mourning following the death of Camilo Nuin, an 18-year-old player for second-division club San Telmo, who passed away on Wednesday during what was expected to be a routine knee operation.

The club confirmed the tragic news in a statement, announcing it would close as a sign of mourning.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Camilo Ernesto Nuin, a player in our Youth and Reserve Divisions, who was undergoing surgery today,” San Telmo posted on its official X social media account. “We join his family, friends, and teammates in this difficult time and remain at their disposal for anything they may need.”

Nuin, a left-footed midfielder, was undergoing a common surgical procedure to repair meniscal and cruciate ligament injuries in his knee. The specific cause of his death during the operation has not yet been disclosed by the club or local authorities. Argentine media have reported that investigations into the circumstances surrounding his passing are ongoing.

Nuin joined San Telmo in 2022 after developing through the prestigious youth academies of Argentine giants Boca Juniors and Independiente.

The Argentine Football Association (AFA) was among several football organizations to express its sorrow. “The Argentine Football Association, through its president Claudio Tapia and Executive Committee, expresses its sorrow at the death of Camilo Nuin and extends its condolences to the player’s family,” the AFA stated.
