Villa’s Champions League hopes dented by Monaco defeat

Aston Villa missed a chance to solidify their position in the Champions League knockout stages with a 1-0 defeat to Monaco at Stade Louis II. Wilfried Singo’s early header proved to be the difference, leaving Villa needing a win against Celtic in their final group game to guarantee a top-eight finish.1

Despite the defeat, Villa remain in a strong position to progress to the knockout rounds. They are currently level with Monaco on 13 points, and a victory against Celtic at Villa Park next Wednesday would secure their place in the last 16.

Monaco took the lead in the eighth minute when Singo headed home from close range after Emiliano Martinez had saved Thilo Kehrer’s initial effort.2 Villa struggled to create clear-cut chances, with Monaco goalkeeper Radoslaw Majecki denying both Leon Bailey and Ollie Watkins in the first half.

Missed Opportunity for Villa

This defeat will be a disappointment for Unai Emery’s side, who had the opportunity to all but secure their place in the knockout stages with a victory. However, their recent away form has been a concern, with Villa losing six of their last nine games on the road prior to this match.

They struggled to break down Monaco’s defense and lacked the attacking fluency that has characterized their impressive debut season in the Champions League. Even the introduction of Jhon Duran in the second half failed to spark an improvement.

Despite the setback, Villa remain in a strong position to progress to the next stage. They will be hoping to bounce back with a victory against Celtic in their final group game and secure their place in the last 16.
