Villa’s Valiant Comeback Falls Short as Donnarumma Sends PSG into UCL Semis
Aston Villa produced a stunning second-half fightback but were ultimately eliminated from the Champions League as Paris Saint-Germain survived a major scare to progress 5-4 on aggregate, despite losing the quarter-final second leg 3-2 at a tumultuous Villa Park on Tuesday night, April 15th. Goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma made a series of crucial late saves to deny Villa a famous comeback.
Trailing 3-1 from the first leg in Paris, Villa’s hopes seemed extinguished when PSG raced into a 2-0 lead on the night within the first 27 minutes. Achraf Hakimi scored early, capitalizing on a mistake by Villa keeper Emiliano Martinez, and Nuno Mendes added a second, extending PSG’s aggregate advantage to a commanding 5-1.
However, inspired by a fervent home crowd, Unai Emery’s side refused to yield. Youri Tielemans pulled a goal back with a deflected shot in the 34th minute, offering a glimmer of hope before halftime.
Villa Park erupted early in the second half as the hosts scored twice in two minutes to turn the tie on its head. Captain John McGinn netted with a powerful 20-yard strike in the 55th minute, before defender Ezri Konsa finished coolly after excellent work by Marcus Rashford just two minutes later, putting Villa 3-2 ahead on the night and just one goal away from levelling the aggregate score.
With PSG rattled, Donnarumma became the visitors’ hero. The Italian international produced magnificent saves to deny Rashford’s rising drive and Tielemans’ header. He then made perhaps the most crucial stop, saving at the feet of substitute Marco Asensio when the former PSG loanee was clean through on goal.
Despite Villa’s relentless pressure, they couldn’t find the fourth goal. PSG, having weathered the storm, held on to secure their place in the semi-finals, where they will face the winner of Wednesday’s tie between Arsenal and Real Madrid.
Aston Villa, despite the heartbreak of elimination, received a rousing standing ovation for their valiant effort in their first Champions League knockout campaign since the 1982-83 season.
