Al Hilal Eyeing to land Bruno Fernandes Ahead of Club World Cup

Saudi Pro League club Al Hilal are reportedly exploring a significant bid to sign Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes within the next fortnight, aiming to secure the midfielder before the FIFA Club World Cup kicks off in the United States next month, sources have told ESPN.

Al Hilal are understood to be keen on making a marquee signing to bolster their squad for the prestigious tournament. Their interest in Fernandes has intensified after discussions to sign Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah reportedly concluded when the Egyptian international penned a new contract with the Premier League champions.

While Manchester United’s official stance, supported by head coach Ruben Amorim, has been that the Portugal international is not for sale, sources indicate that Al Hilal and Saudi deal-makers believe a substantial offer – potentially in the region of £100 million – could persuade the Old Trafford club to part ways with their 30-year-old captain.

Manchester United’s financial position has been impacted by their failure to qualify for any European competition for the upcoming season. The club has been actively working to comply with Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), implementing a series of cost-cutting measures and an extensive redundancy programme under the new co-ownership of Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Despite these financial constraints, United have reportedly allocated funds for summer transfers and have agreed to trigger the £62.5 million ($84.2 million) release clause in the contract of Wolves forward Matheus Cunha.

The potential departure of Fernandes would undoubtedly be a significant blow to Ruben Amorim’s plans. However, a considerable transfer fee would provide the Portuguese coach with greater flexibility to continue revamping his squad, particularly after missing out on another target.

Manchester United had reportedly agreed to trigger the £30 million release clause for Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap and meet his wage demands. However, the 22-year-old has opted to join Chelsea, citing their qualification for the Champions League as a key factor in his decision.

The developing situation around Bruno Fernandes highlights the increasing financial muscle of Saudi Pro League clubs and the complex decisions facing traditional European powerhouses like Manchester United as they navigate transfer market pressures and regulatory financial frameworks.
