Arsenal beat Liverpool on penalties to win Community Shield

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored a spectacular opener and the winner in the penalty shootout as Arsenal beat Premier League champions Liverpool in the Community Shield at an empty Wembley Stadium.

The Gabon international’s curling strike in a sweeping move gave FA Cup holders Arsenal the lead in the first half before Liverpool substitute Takumi Minamino equalised after the break in an entertaing contest.

The Japan international’s flicked pass to Mohamed Salah bounced back kindly for him to slot home from close range after the Reds dominated the possession in the second half.

There was a quick VAR check for handball by Salah but the replay showed no clear contact.

However Arsenal held on to end the full time 1-1 as goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez denied Sadio Mane from close range.

In the shootout Mo Salah opened the scoring for Liverpool while substitute Rhian Brewster’s spot-kick clipped the bar, allowing Aubameyang to step up and seal victory for the Gunners.

This is the second consecutive time Liverpool losing the FA Community shield in a penalty shootout as they lost to Manchester City in 2019.
