Atletico Madrid’s Angel Correa Handed Five-Match Ban for Referee Insults

Atletico Madrid forward Angel Correa has received a five-match suspension from the Spanish soccer federation (RFEF) for insulting a referee during Sunday’s 2-1 La Liga defeat at Getafe. The ban encompasses both domestic league and cup competitions.

Correa was shown a straight red card in the 88th minute of the match for a studs-up tackle on Getafe defender Djene, following a VAR review. He then repeatedly insulted referee Guillermo Cuadra Fernandez, with the referee including Correa’s remarks in his official match report.

The RFEF’s disciplinary action comprises a one-match ban for the red card itself and an additional four-match suspension for the subsequent insults directed at the referee.

The 30-year-old Argentine international will miss Atletico Madrid’s next five domestic fixtures. These include La Liga matches against Barcelona, Espanyol, Sevilla, and Valladolid, as well as the second leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final tie against Barcelona.

Correa has scored seven goals in 38 appearances across all competitions for Atletico this season. His absence represents a significant blow to Diego Simeone’s squad as they compete in both La Liga and the Copa del Rey.
