Bayern denied early title by Leipzig’s last-gasp equaliser

Yussuf Poulsen scored a dramatic stoppage-time goal as RB Leipzig held Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich to a thrilling 3-3 draw on Saturday, delaying the Bavarians’ title celebrations for at least another day.

Bayern, playing without their suspended top scorer Harry Kane, knew a victory would secure their 34th German league title if second-placed Bayer Leverkusen failed to win their match on Sunday. However, they faced a determined Leipzig side still fighting for a Champions League spot.

Leipzig started strongly and deservedly led 2-0 at halftime. Benjamin Šeško opened the scoring in the 11th minute with a superbly curled finish past goalkeeper Jonas Urbig after a swift counter-attack initiated by Xavi Simons. Lukas Klostermann then doubled the lead in the 39th minute, heading home David Raum’s free-kick delivery.

Bayern mounted a stunning comeback early in the second half. Eric Dier headed in from a Michael Olise corner in the 62nd minute, and just a minute later, Olise himself levelled the scores, capitalising on some sloppy Leipzig play to rifle home the equaliser.

When Leroy Sané put Bayern 3-2 ahead with a fierce strike seven minutes from time, it appeared the title was heading back to Munich. Kane even moved down from the stands to the sidelines, seemingly ready to celebrate with his teammates.

But Leipzig refused to give up, and in the fourth minute of stoppage time, substitute Yussuf Poulsen latched onto a flick-on and cleverly chipped the ball over Urbig to snatch a point for the hosts.

The draw leaves Bayern top with 76 points. They will be confirmed as champions on Sunday if Bayer Leverkusen (currently on 67 points) fail to win away at Freiburg. If Leverkusen win, Bayern can secure the title next Saturday when they host Borussia Mönchengladbach. The point keeps RB Leipzig fifth with 50 points, still in contention for a top-four finish.
