Is Salah The Best Winger in Premier League History?
Just a few days back in April, Mohamed Salah climbed the pinnacle of his Premier League career, being the highest active goalscorer of all-time in EPL history. He overtook Manchester City’s former Argentine striker Kun Agüero’s record on April 27, 2025. The 32-year-old Liverpool right winger has recently scored 185 goals in the English top-flight competition.
In this season, Salah has scored 28 goals and assisted in 18 finishes, and that helped the club to lift the PL title easily. He is also the club’s third-highest goalscorer of all time. Now, a discussion is going on whether Salah is the greatest winger of all time in the English Premier League.
Since last December, Mohamed Salah has been ranked as the top of the 5 wingers in the previous PL season. Does that make him ahead of all? But the English Premier League once upon a time witnessed forwards and midfielders like Cristiano Ronaldo, Thierry Henry, Eric Cantona, Steven Gerrard, Ryan Giggs, Alan Shearer, Frank Lampard, and others consistently showing stellar performances.
Rio Ferdinand has denied calling Salah the best ever EPL player in history. The legendary Man Utd. CB told, “No chance. He’s not ahead of Thierry Henry and Cristiano Ronaldo. Stats-wise and consistency-wise, he is in the conversation, in the top three definitely, but in terms of someone who excites me, the maverick, that’s what elevates them for me to be the best”.
The experts and sports stats-trackers are analysing the same. Salah has been phenomenal since his contract started in Liverpool. He has so far scored 244 goals and has contributed 113 assists in his 397-game appearance for Liverpool.
He is the first footballer to reach a milestone of more than 25 goals and 15 assists in a single season. In the 2017-18 season, Salah emerged as the PL Player of the Tournament. But consecutively in the 2004 and 2005 seasons, Thierry Henry from Arsenal won the same title.
Also, in terms of the Golden Boot winners’ tally, Henry has the highest achievement four times. The debate is unresolved in many aspects.
