Riccardo Orsolini scored a sensational stoppage-time bicycle kick to give Bologna a dramatic 1-0 home victory over Inter Milan on Sunday, April 20th, dealing a significant blow to the reigning champions’ Serie A title defence.

In a largely cagey match with few clear-cut opportunities at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara, the deadlock was finally broken deep into added time. Following a long throw-in that was flicked on, substitute Orsolini reacted acrobatically to volley the ball into the net, securing a vital three points for Bologna.

The hosts had arguably created better chances earlier, with Thijs Dallinga denied by a Benjamin Pavard block in the first half. The second half became increasingly tense, leading to red cards for both Bologna coach Vincenzo Italiano and Inter assistant Massimiliano Farris after a touchline argument.

Inter’s Mehdi Taremi saw a late close-range effort blocked by Juan Miranda before Orsolini’s spectacular winner, his 12th league goal of the season.

The defeat means Inter Milan, still chasing a potential treble, remain top of Serie A on 71 points but are now level with second-placed Napoli, who won 1-0 at Monza on Saturday.

The Nerazzurri, who have won only one of their last seven away league games, now face a crucial 10-day period featuring a Coppa Italia semi-final second leg against AC Milan, a league clash with AS Roma, and the first leg of their Champions League semi-final against Barcelona.

Bologna’s victory provisionally moves them up to fourth place on 60 points, boosting their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League for the first time in over 60 years. They also hold a 3-0 lead heading into their Coppa Italia semi-final second leg against Empoli.
