Borussia Dortmund Sack Head Coach Nuri Şahin

Borussia Dortmund have dismissed head coach Nuri Şahin following a disappointing run of results, culminating in a 2-1 defeat to Bologna in the Champions League. The loss marked Dortmund’s fourth consecutive defeat in all competitions and leaves them tenth in the Bundesliga, 20 points adrift of leaders Bayern Munich.

Despite the team’s struggles, Dortmund remain well-placed to progress to the knockout stages of the Champions League. However, their domestic form has been a major concern, with only one win in their last nine matches in all competitions.

“We value Nuri Şahin and his work very much,” said Dortmund sporting director Lars Ricken. “We hoped for a long-term collaboration and until the end we had hoped that we could achieve a sporting turnaround together. After four defeats in a row, due to only one win in the last nine games and currently tenth in the Bundesliga table, we have unfortunately lost faith in being able to achieve our sporting goals in the current constellation.”

Şahin expressed his disappointment at the decision, but acknowledged the team’s failure to meet expectations.

“Unfortunately, we have not managed to live up to Borussia Dortmund’s sporting ambitions this season,” Şahin said. “I wish this special club all the best.”

Dortmund’s Search for a New Coach

Dortmund have yet to announce Şahin’s successor, but have confirmed that Under-19s coach Mike Tullberg will take charge of the team for this weekend’s game against Werder Bremen. Erik ten Hag, the former Manchester United manager, has been linked with the role, but sources suggest he is not interested in returning to management at this time.

Şahin’s departure marks the end of his short tenure as Dortmund head coach. He was appointed in June 2024, replacing Edin Terzic, who left the club after their defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League final.

Şahin previously enjoyed two spells as a player at Dortmund and served as assistant coach to Terzic before taking the top job. He now faces an uncertain future, while Dortmund begin their search for a new manager to revive their fortunes.
